Kevin Stierhoff, a marine biologist and woodworking enthusiast, discovered the Santa Cruz Woodturners and the joy of woodturning during the COVID pandemic. Since then, he's explored various disciplines of woodturning, but gravitates toward turning functional items from locally and sustainably sourced materials. He credits much of his woodturning success to the generosity, camaraderie, creativity, and skill of the Club's ever-growing membership. First elected to the Board as Vice President in 2024, Kevin enjoys serving on the A/V Committee and teaching his young daughter in his home workshop and learning from his colleagues during monthly gatherings. david dietrichTreasurer, 2026
David Dietrich is a retired Engineer, and after several decades slogging it out in Silicon Valley, he now enjoys making large piles of wood shavings. What's left is sometimes pleasing to the eye. bill hopkinsImmediate past Officer, 2025
As a podiatric surgeon, Bill Hopkins did delicate work with his hands every day, balancing those small muscle endeavors with endurance athletics and edgy rock climbing. Upon retirement, Bill sought new ways to keep his hands busy. He found a passionate answer when he was introduced to the lathe by a friend and medical colleague who happened to be a Santa Cruz Woodturner (Wells Shoemaker). Bill’s skills mushroomed, and he’s now a polished demonstrator. He continues to challenge himself with more advanced techniques. “Every piece is a journey, and every journey is a piece of life.” |

Kevin Osborn is a retired engineering manager who has enjoyed working with wood since he inherited his grandfather's lathe at age 17. His woodturning interests took a long break during his working years. Luckily, he has time again! Kevin has been involved with the club for 3 years and has mostly been working on the A/V committee to establish a working hybrid meeting format. His main woodturning pursuits are making bowls and keeping the shavings out of the house. Kevin is also heavily involved in the local photographic community. kathryn harvey

Kathryn has long enjoyed wood as a medium, whether in utilitarian or art form, marveling at the beauty of the grain and the direct link to the natural world. Technical turning, however, came to her more recently. As a family physician for more than 30 years as well as a caregiver to her family, she found a balancing, creative outlet with the lathe. The endless opportunities for artistic expression and a love of learning led to a deep dive. Beyond the satisfaction of working with natural grain, Kathryn’s current explorations involve enhancements such as color and inlay. joe nugentMember-at-Large, 2026
After a mere 50 year break, my younger brother reintroduced me to wood turning, and I found myself hooked once again. Finding a used lathe online and spending a small fortune on adjoining tools, I was off to the races. I enjoyed the good fortune to be introduced to the Santa Cruz Woodturners by Roy Holmberg in 2024. It was also a delight to find Sue Broadston, a co-founder of the club and someone whom I had the pleasure of knowing while I was the Director of Facilities at Cabrillo College. Without the extraordinary depth of knowledge and fantastic group of serious woodturners, one might still be turning bowls with pith and frustration. Looking forward to learning more and developing skills in a craft that brings enrichment and satisfaction. |
