Kevin StierhoffPresident, 2025
Kevin Stierhoff, a marine biologist and woodworking enthusiast, discovered the Santa Cruz Woodturners and the joy of woodturning during the COVID pandemic. Since then, he's explored various disciplines of woodturning, but gravitates toward turning functional items from locally and sustainably sourced materials. He credits much of his woodturning success to the generosity, camaraderie, creativity, and skill of the Club's ever-growing membership. First elected to the Board as Vice President in 2024, Kevin enjoys serving on the A/V Committee and teaching his young daughter in his home workshop and learning from his colleagues during monthly gatherings. bill hopkins

As a podiatric surgeon, Bill Hopkins did delicate work with his hands every day, balancing those small muscle endeavors with endurance athletics and edgy rock climbing. Upon retirement, Bill sought new ways to keep his hands busy. He found a passionate answer when he was introduced to the lathe by a friend and medical colleague who happened to be a Santa Cruz Woodturner (Wells Shoemaker). Bill’s skills mushroomed, and he’s now a polished demonstrator. He continues to challenge himself with more advanced techniques. “Every piece is a journey, and every journey is a piece of life.” sue broadston

After four decades of teaching physics and playing volleyball, Sue discovered the delight of a hobby she could do all by herself—woodturning! Shortly after that revelation, the Santa Cruz Woodturners club founders held their inaugural meeting in her garage...and the rest is history. Twice serving as president of Santa Cruz Woodturners, Sue enjoys the company of folks in the Club as much as the whispering hiss of shavings. Club members now have a real woodshop for meetings and the extra bonus of an occasional outdoor woodworking venue at The Ranch. Come join us! |

Kevin Osborn is a retired engineering manager who has enjoyed working with wood since he inherited his grandfather's lathe at age 17. His woodturning interests took a long break during his working years. Luckily, he has time again! Kevin has been involved with the club for 3 years and has mostly been working on the A/V committee to establish a working hybrid meeting format. His main woodturning pursuits are making bowls and keeping the shavings out of the house. Kevin is also heavily involved in the local photographic community. kathryn harvey

Kathryn has long enjoyed wood as a medium, whether in utilitarian or art form, marveling at the beauty of the grain and the direct link to the natural world. Technical turning, however, came to her more recently. As a family physician for more than 30 years as well as a caregiver to her family, she found a balancing, creative outlet with the lathe. The endless opportunities for artistic expression and a love of learning led to a deep dive. Beyond the satisfaction of working with natural grain, Kathryn’s current explorations involve enhancements such as color and inlay. jeremy hurford

Jeremy, already a skilled handyman and woodworker, was introduced to turning by one of Santa Cruz Woodturners’ founders, Sue Broadston, 12 years ago. It seems Sue had future vision...and she gave Jeremy a small lathe. Since then, Jeremy has become an avid woodturner, working with both wood and manmade materials. He focuses primarily on smaller projects, such as bottle stoppers, "magic wands," and various toys, rather than larger pieces. Now a captivating demonstrator, Jeremy attributes much of his growth in the craft to the support and generosity of the members of the Santa Cruz Woodturners. |
