About us
Santa Cruz Woodturners brings together more than 40 individuals who find fascination and friendship in a craft that dates to Egyptian civilization--making practical, artistic, and sometimes fanciful objects from a piece of wood spinning on a lathe.
Our members span a wide range of ages, and our careers have taken us down many paths--teachers, lawyers, builders, professional craftsmen, businessmen, researchers, county engineers, tech designers, doctors...plus a couple rocket scientists, one blacksmith, and two winemakers. We share the delight in mounting a piece of raw wood onto a precision tool, guiding a sharp piece of steel with our hands, and creating a practical bowl for the table, a giggly toy for a child, a sculptural masterpiece for a gallery, the legs to a table, a column for a doorway...or a bung for a wine barrel. Our skill levels at the lathe range from beginners to advanced professionals, but through Santa Cruz Woodturners, we all learn something new every month and get to use that knowledge right away. We are happy members of the American Association of Woodturners, a true fountain of leadership stimulation, practical information, and top notch education. |
